The Bride of Christ

Introduction

The story of Jesus and his Bride is the greatest love story of all time.  It’s a story which started in heaven before creation began, is woven through the pages of the Bible and culminates in the return of Jesus to the earth to claim his Bride.

Hallelujah!  For our Lord God Almighty reigns.  Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory!  For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready (Revelation 19:6-7).

I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband (Revelation 21:3).

Begins with creation

The story begins with God’s creation of the world, and the pinnacle of his creation, man.  God gave Eve to Adam as a helper and together they lived in perfect unity, stewarding the earth in willing response to God’s request.  Relationship with God was free-flowing, natural and full.

Disobedience brings a breach

Adam and Eve’s choice to disobey God brought a breach in their relationship with him.  Instead of eagerly awaiting their fellowship, Adam and Eve hid.  The penalty of their sin was mortal death and exclusion from the Garden.  Every succeeding generation was affected by their actions.  Social unrest, jealousy, war, injustice, poverty, etc entered the scene and the beauty of creation was marred.

The Father sends his Son

Far from turning his back on his creation however, God continually appealed to his people to return to him.  A handful through the generations remained steadfast in their relationship with him but most turned their backs.  The time came for the next stage in God’s great salvation plan.  He sent his Son, Jesus, to live in and with his creation, to demonstrate the love the Father has for his wayward children, a love which was stretched to the limit as Jesus paid the ultimate cost – undeserved and cruel death and separation from the Father.

Death could not hold the Son

Death could not hold the Son of God and he rose victorious, the Bridegroom still longing for his Bride.  Back in heaven in the presence of the Father and with the Holy Spirit released in the earth, he looks for those with clean hands and pure hearts, who have responded to the saving grace of Jesus and have been washed clean by his sacrifice on the cross.  They are the ones who even now are preparing for that great marriage supper of the Lamb when all those who remain true to Jesus and have trusted in him will be invited to share that celebration with him.

The Bride makes herself ready

While the darkness in the world increases, with yet more injustice, unrest, war, natural disaster, etc, the Bride is making herself ready for the day when her Bridegroom will appear.  In the near future, when all the preparations are complete, Jesus will return as he promised.  Every eye will see him, and those who are part of his Bride will rejoice and be glad for the waiting will be over and they will enjoy eternity with their Bridegroom King, ruling and reigning with him, the lover of their souls - the perfect culmination of the perfect love story.
