Relationship with God

Introduction

Central to our value system as individuals and community is our relationship with the God of the Bible.  He is our motivation and desire.  We believe the Bible is his self-revelation through which we can know him.  We believe that the one true God exists eternally in three persons - the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - and that these three, being one God, are equal in deity, power and glory.

We believe that God not only created the world, but also now upholds, sustains, governs, and providentially directs all that takes place throughout the universe - he will bring all things to their proper conclusion/consummation in Christ Jesus at the close of the age.

Distinct from creation

He is distinct and separate from his creation.  At a time when 'East has come West,' society rejects biblical Christianity and embraces Eastern mysticism, New Age, Gnostic and Pagan ideas; the liberal church does the same and the idea that everything and everyone is God, gains momentum, it's important that we draw this distinction.  For more on this see Emerging Church/New Spirituality and One World Religion/New Spirituality.

The only true God

God is transcendent and yet immanent and knowable through relationship with Jesus and the indwelling Holy Spirit.  He is the only true God and the only way to know him is through faith in Jesus Christ.  Whilst the idea that all roads lead to God and aspects of his truth can be found in every religion is gaining popularity, the Bible tells us that all other so-called god's and religions are false, and any acceptance of Pluralism, Interfaith and Syncretism, is idolatrous.

We believe that when the Gospel is presented truthfully it is both culturally subversive and inevitably politically incorrect.  Sadly, the 'gospel' being marketed by the liberal Emerging Church is one of 'tolerance and inclusiveness' and as such bears no relationship to orthodox Christianity.  It is morally ambiguous, culturally syncretised, politically correct and another 'gospel' altogether.

See our Statement of Faith which sets the scene for what we believe, our expectations of God and how we seek to live as individuals and as a Community.

A relationship

Being a Christian entails having a personal relationship with the living God who desires to interact with us.  It is not, as some suggest, just about holding to a set of beliefs.  Don't misunderstand, what we believe is incredibly important (there is only one true Gospel) but without the relationship, it is nothing.

Whilst the written word of God is the basis for all Christian practice, beliefs and doctrine, it was never intended to completely replace the Lord's personal interaction with us through the Holy Spirit.  As we are told in John 10, his sheep know his voice and follow him.  The Lord speaks to us through the Bible, but also in other ways - inner witness or impressions, an audible voice, a prophetic word or revelation, a dream or vision, a picture, an angelic visitation, through community interaction, through signs in nature, through another person, etc.

Outward show?

Sadly, the Bible makes it clear that it's possible to have the outward show of successful, charismatic Christianity without experiencing the life of the Holy Spirit on a day to day basis (Rev 3:1).  You can have the reputation of being alive, but in reality are spiritually dead.  Click here for teaching notes entitled 'Religion or relationship?'  For further inspiration we recommend Jack Deere's books: 'Surprised by the voice of God' and 'Surprised by the power of the Spirit' and Richard F Lovelace's book 'Dynamics of Spiritual Life.'
